The Reset Retreat: Yucca Valley

Why you should go packrafting in Vera Cruz

So…you wanna go boating, all day, everyday, for a few days - but you don’t want a committed expedition. Let me introduce you to Jalcomulco, Vera Cruz, Mexico.

Boasting splashy Class II jungle runs along side some of the whitewater in North America, you can spend a week in Jalco and never paddle the same section twice. A network of guides a message away, enjoy boating, hot springs, and local Vera Cruz culture all in one place.

❋ World Class Paddling

With runs from Class II day trips from town to the source to sea Class 5 bangers, Vera Cruz offers world class paddling.

❋ Easy to Access Guides

The Jalco and greater Vera Cruz guide community is small and well connected, simply text a guide, and get your adventure started. If they can’t help you, they will know someone who can.

❋ East Shuttles

From taking the bus, grabbing a taxi, or hiring a shuttle from GoKayak - shuttles are some of the easiest logistics of your trip.

❋ A Supportive & Safe Space

The river guide community out of Vera Cruz takes safety very seriously, most recently certifying an entire class of Mexican Guides to ACA Level 4 Swiftwater

Jalcomulco is anything but a sleepy river town, full of vibrancy, culture, and a sense of community the world seems to be missing - a week in Jalcomulco will quite literally heal you in way you didn’t know you needed. The epicenter of a thriving rafting and kayaking community, Jalcomulco has been quietly turning out some of the best boaters in the world for decades.

Almost dammed in 2014, the Antigua River flows through the heart of Jalcomulco, its people, and any boater who has the absolute honor of paddling these waves. Here, packrafters can drop 30ft falls and paddle straight to the ocean. Sounds like a dream, except it’s real: Jalcomulco, Vera Cruz, MX

From Cotapex

Lower Antigua (Class II+)

  • A mellow section right out of Jalcomulco with fun, bumpy, rocky rapids — a great warm-up float for most paddlers.

Barranca Grande Pescados (Class IV)

  • A continuous committed canyon of mostly Class III - Class IV boating with the occasional Class V line. Can be paddled in one long day or overnight.

4 x IV - Upper Pescados (Class IV)

  • A hike in, paddle out section of the Pescados River including 4 separate Class IV rapids in quick succession, steep, technical whitewater with bigger drops and more powerful flows. Despite the spicy nature of this run, most of these features are isolated and can be lapped.

Lower Pescados (Class III+)

  • A fun, continuous, splashy run with lots of techy rock gardens, quality surf waves and continuous moving water — a step up in challenge from the town run. Also several epic boof rocks!

Rio Actopan - Class II/III (Optional Class IV)

  • Originating at the base of a series of incredible waterfalls, the Actopan is a fast, pushy, splashy river that feels very creeky at times. An optional Class IV slide at the put in, below this is 2 hours of read and run fun fun. Continuous flows between eddies.

Rio Alseseca Roadside Run (Class IV)

  • Roadside, multiple Class IV falls and deep good good

Rio Gachapan (Class II–III)

  • Also near Costa de Oro, narrower with lush vegetation, fun rapids, and a more relaxed vibe

Rio Oro- Class IV/V

  • A stunning Class IV river known for it’s dramatic 30ft runnable falls and ending at the ocean.
